International Conductors Competition ‘Arthur Nikisch’

The Association “Artes,” in collaboration with the Bulgarian Association “Artem,” along with the Sofia Philharmonic and the Pleven Philharmonic, proudly present the second edition of the International Conducting Competition “Arthur Nikisch.”

The competition will take place in person in two rounds from June 6th to June 10th, 2022, in Pleven, at the “Emil Dimitrov” Hall in the Community Centre “Saglasie – 1869,” with a final concert featuring the competition laureates in Sofia, at the “Bulgaria” Hall on June 11th, 2022, starting at 7:00 p.m.

The competition repertoire ranges from opera to symphonic music and aims to thoroughly showcase the conducting abilities and artistry of the participants. As an international competition, its goal is to support young conductors in developing their careers. The international conductors competition “Arthur Nikisch” provides new horizons for the winners and significant media exposure for all admitted candidates.

The prizes consist of providing professional opportunities with some of the most prestigious institutions in the participating countries, such as the Sofia Philharmonic and the Pleven Philharmonic in Bulgaria, the Chamber Ensemble “Dianopolis” in Yambol, the Grand Avignon Opera in France, the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania in Italy, and the Academic Theatre in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

The two competition rounds will be held according to the following schedule:
June 6-8 – 10 am – 1:30 pm – First Round
June 9 – 10 am – 1:30 mp – Second Round
June 10 (Friday) – 10 am – 1:30 pm – Semi-final Round

On June 11, 2022, at 19:00, in Sofia, Bulgaria, at Hall “Bulgaria,” the final concert of the three laureates of the competition will be held, featuring the following programme:
Johannes Brahms – Symphony No. 1
Sergei Rachmaninoff – Piano Concerto No. 2, soloist Ivan Donchev
Giuseppe Verdi – Aria “Cortigiani, vil razza dannata” from the opera “Rigoletto”
Giacomo Puccini – Aria “Mi chiamano Mimi” from the opera “La Bohème”
Giacomo Puccini – Aria “E lucevan le stelle” from the opera “Tosca”

The members of the jury of the International Conducting Competition “Artur Nikish” are musicians with rich creative experience from Europe, Russia, and the United States.
The broad geographical reach of the competition, along with the prestige of the participating institutions and personalities, guarantee vast opportunities for the winners in the current landscape of classical music competitions.

It is also remarkable that all stages of the Arthur Nikisch International Conductor Competition will be held live, thereby offering even greater visibility to the participants before a wide audience and providing every admirer of classical art with impressions of the talent of the young conductors.
